Search Engine optimisation (SEO) - get the rant out of the way

 

Search engine optimisation - in my eyes a very controversial subject. Should you be paying so called specialist companies a small fortune to optimise your web site? Should they be charging you large sums of money for an on-going campaign? Would I pay additional money after having my web site built?

Simple answer to all the above is NO!

How many phone calls have you had with somebody promising you "Oh give us 7 days and you will be featured on the front page of Google", "your page rank is not very high and we can change that over night". I for one have lost count, but it does not stop the frustration boiling up when I do receive the type of misleading phone calls.

In non eloquent terms SEO IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE, some web development companies are better at it than others and that will never change, but ask yourself the following...

... What do the so called specialists tell you needs to happen for your web sites search engine placement to be enhanced? Usual answer - "Oh we need to make some modifications to your web site to improve your chances of being indexed" (Probably one of the most straightforward, correct and honest statements you will get, that is assuming you do not rank highly on the search engines).

So the next question you should be asking yourself is WHY?

SEO is not an afterthought when you build a web site, yes it can be rectified but with unnecessary expense, it is an element of design that needs to be incorporated from the outset.

So what should happen with your web site and SEO?

Simply put, your web designers & development team should have thought about all of the key elements prior to setting the web site loose and with good design structure, relevant content and healthy links you will have the foundations to help your web site get noticed...
